- Abstract:
The aim of the experiment: Is to find the
time constant () and the value of the
capacitor, also to find the peak voltage in RC,
RL and LC circuits.

The method used: is by using the

oscilloscope to display VC and VR and the time
constant to compare the theoretical and
experimental answers.

- Theory :
RC circuits:
For charging capacitor Q(t)=Qmax(1-e-t/RC) , and the
voltage across the plates VC = Q/C , then
VC = (1-e-t/RC) . to find the time constant VC = 0.63
.
For the discharging capacitor:
Q(t)=Ce-t/RC , then the voltage across its plates
has the formula : VC = Vmax e-t/RC , and this value
equals to 0.37 from th maximum voltage , VC =
0.37 .
RL circuits:

The current passing through the circuit is: I(t)=

(1-e-Rt/L)
The voltage across the resistor: VR = (1-e-t/RL) , and
the voltage across the conductor: VL = e-Rt/L
LC circuits:
The voltage across the plates of the capacitor is :
1

VC = VC0Cos(t+) , since =

- Procedure :
RC circuits:
after connecting the circuit , the oscilloscope
has been used to display VC and VR to measure
for both charging and discharging
RL circuits:
The same operations for the RC circuit, we
used the oscilloscope to display VC and VR on
the screen , then measuring the time constant
for charging and discharging.
LC circuits: After connecting the circuit, we
used the oscilloscope to display VC , then
measuring the amplitude, also the frequency,
the calculating the experimental answers.

- Data:

By using the oscilloscope we had this data for the

different circuits:
R= 1K , C= 0.1 F , L= 10 mH
1- RC circuits:

V (v)
t(ms)
0.63V
0.37V

-

discharging

4.958

2- RL circuit:

V (v)
t (ms)
0.63V
0.37V

discharging

4.4

3- LC circuit :
Frequency = 4.77 kHz
Then exp equals to (4.77)*(2)=30144

- Calculation:
In the data above, we can see the experimental
values, which should be close to theoretical values:

RC circuits:
The experimental value of is avg
=(64+150)/2 = 9.6 ms .
From the theory =RC = 1K * 0.1 F = 10
ms .
RL circuits:
exp = (11+6)/2 = 8.5 s
th = RC = 1K * 10 mH = 10 s
LC circuits:
We calculated exp = (4.77)*(2)=30144
And th = 1/(LC) = 31622.7

- Conclusion :
We concluded that the experimental results are
close to theoretical results, the RC and RL circuits
have an exponential graphs, but the LC sircuit has
a graph of a sin wave.
