History
Bucktowns history began in the early 1800s and was settled by Polish
immigrants that fled their war torn country in the early 1830s. The name Bucktown
is thought to have derived from the Polish settlers, as many raised and herded goats.
The correct term for a male goat is buck, therefore the settlement became known as
Bucktown. Because of this odd name, many real estate agents in the past did not
believe that houses in the area would sell very well and referred to Bucktown as
West DePaul or North Wicker Park. The Polish had begun settling into Jefferson
Township as well as the area bounded by Fullerton, Damen, Armitage and Western,
later becoming known as Holstein. The area was covered by marshes and forests
and bountiful with game.

History Continued
In the1840s, the area had its own post office and hotel, the Powell House, at
Armitage and Milwaukee. In the winter of 1848, German immigrants had begun to
travel to Chicago. During this time, many of the immigrants were malnourished from
the journey. Marcus Nobles, along with Archibald Clybourn, who was the founder of
the first meatpacking house near Elston and Armitage, supplied the immigrants with
flour to settle in the area with and also established the town of Holstein in 1854.
This area was annexed to the city of Chicago on February 13, 1863.

There had been another influx of immigrants in the 1870s up until World War
1, majority being Polish. Jewish immigration began in 1912 and Russian Jews began
to migrate in the 1930s. Latin immigration in the 1960s brought diversity to the
area with its culture as well. This increase in immigrants had provided a large mix of
cultures and beliefs. The Great Chicago Fire in 1871 fueled the continuous growth
of the diverse laborer community. A strong religious presence also formed at the
turn of the century, mostly of Catholics and Jews.

Getting Around!
Getting around the city can seem pretty tricky! However, becoming me informed
can make things more simple.
Having a car is expensive in the city and most use public transportation in order to
get to wherever it is they need to be at a much lower cost. Some forms of public
transportation include the CTA (trains and buses), the Metra, Uber, taxis, and even a
Divvy.

From Loyola to Bucktown

Taking an Uber: The estimated travel time is about 25 minutes with little traffic. The
cost of an Uber ride will range $13-$18. However, traffic in Chicago can get pretty
crazy! Travel time and rates can significantly increase.
Taking the CTA: Will cost significantly less, however, may be more time consuming.
