ExpressingconcernoversuchrareartsofearlymankindinKilvalaiandadjoiningplacesinVillupuramdistrictfacingdestructiondueto
variousactivitiesofvandalism,artloversandresearcherscallforearlystepsbyauthoritiestopreservethemforthebenefitofposterity.
ThepaintingsonthesmallrockcalledRattapparaiareinfoursets.Inthefirstset,threepersonswithamanmountedonahorse,another
pullingthathorsewitharopefastenedtotheanimalwhilethethirdmanisdepictedwithstretchedhandswelcomingothers.Thefourth
groupisapaintingofsixmenstandingandfewotherswithoutstretchedhands.
SuchpaintingsarefoundintheneighbouringvillagesSetavarai,Alampadi,Nayanur,Pollur,Padiyanenthal,ThengunamandSiruvalai.
K.T.Gandhirajan,anindependentartresearchersaid,ThepaintingsonrocksofKilvalaiarefoundinthreerockyareasandpaintedinred
ochre.Thatmightbe3000yearsold.ItisbelievedthatafewsymbolsofpaintingsaresimilartothatfoundintheIndusValleycivilisation.
Thismustbeanidealshelterforhuntergatherercommunity.Amongthethreerocks,twoarefacingdestructionsduetovandalismsuchas
mininginthenearbyareas.Duetorampantmininginthenearbyareasanddevelopmentofmicroorganisms,thepigmentofpaintingis
peelingoff.
AsaheritagerichsitesituatednearPuducherry,wheretouriststroopintheweekends,artloversalsosuggestthatthesesitescanbepromoted
underheritagetourism.
