susceptibleofcompleteorsatisfactoryinterpretationatpresent,andnothingmorecanbedonethantooffersometentativeinferencesfrom
therecordswhichwillrequireconfirmationormodificationinthelightoffurtherstudy.Forhistorians,therelatedendeavourslike
decipheringthem,knowingthelanguageofinscriptions,techniquesofretrievinginformationandperfectunderstandingofculturaland
historicalcontextsinvolvesubtletiesbutposeachallengingtask.
Effortsusingepigraphicalrecordstoreconstructalldomainsofhumanity,withspecialfocusonsocioculturaltraditionsareawelcome
contribution.Thebookunderreviewisthecombinationofseveralarticlesbytheauthoron15topicsonmanydomainsoftheCholaperiod.

andfinallycommunal.Infine,Cholasocietywasnotstaticbutwitnessedchangesinmanysectionsandreflectedintheagesthatfollowed.
Theauthordisprovesthebeliefthatallwomenattachedtothetemplesperformedsinginganddancingonlyanddemonstratesthatthey
performedmanydutieslikecleaning,cooking,garlandmaking,huskingpaddyandtheywerepaidequallyliketheirmalecounterpart.

themweregrantedtitleRayandenotingtheirofficialpositionordesignationintheCholaperiod.Inthiscontext,itisworthcorroborating
themwiththebiographyofAdiSankarawhichreiterateshisreturnfromKashmirwithagroupofKashmirscholarstoestablishapanIndian
religiousethos.
UnderFeudalisminSouthIndianContextshereopensthedebateontheexistenceoffeudalisminIndiaasadvocatedbyscholarslike
R.S.SharmainhismagnumopusIndianFeudalism.Sheanalyticallyarguesthatindepthstudyoflandgrantrecordsfromthe6CEtothe13
