Breaking Good _| NIMHANS TOPPER Siatey taco ocenence | INTERVIEW-RANK 4 exams! Sometimes it's good to know By: CELEBRITY SPOTTER who landed 4” on the moon!! DR.BIPIN DAGA- A CELEB HIMSELF By Dr Dhaval Gohil POSTER SIGNES VITAUX- Anatomy, Physio Biochem Editor's word....from the myocardium @ ‘e present you with the first edition of our magazine “CROSSROADZ” named so, because aren't all PG aspirants at crossroads of their careers during this post MBBS phase? Multiple dilemmas of how, why & which branch of MD/MS have to be taken up is agonizing. It's a routine in our country for medicos after internship to pack their bags and leave to far off places like Kerala (not so much God's own country during pg preparation), Bangalore(yes too much traffic) , Delhi(metros are crowded) and few get into residential coaching classes(phew). With a dream in our eyes anda promise in our heart to return home victoriously with a dream PG seat, we take our first unsteady steps. After slogging in those dusty libraries with cutting chais in breaks, gruelling coaching classes, looking dejectedly at those notice boards after monthly test results there is added pressure from parents, peers, relative and also Gf (;) to crack the exam. There are some lonely, frustrating, disappointing moments where one feels like giving up and settling in the Himalayas.(chilly weather with nature's love). There are many aspirants who appear for exams for the umpteenth time and fail. The time duration for preparation is so less that we lose a lot of time trying to adjust to new places and schedules. Lack of guidance makes us directionless and finally theres failure again. Thisis what brings us to “CROSSROADZ” Why and what is CROSSROADZ?? We realised that a similar situation prevails in a medicos life everywhere in the country. The greatest drawback during entrance preparation is lack of motivation and guidance. We fail to recognise the value of time and procrastinate our goals. ‘We then decided to make this gruelling struggle an easy and fun loving yet inspiring journey. We've come up with an idea to compile inspiring stories of toppers and also average MBBS students who made it big in entrance exams with the guidance of coaching staff who would give you an insight about how to crack these exams with a precise strategy. There are many internet portals for these things but here you find toppers more upclose and personal. Moreover we believe print media would be great as you can always have acopyin your hand so that you can read it again and again and keep yourselfinspired rather than logging into a website frequently where you end up wasting your internet data and also shopping online or fbing thus, wasting your precious time. We have also thrown in a few fun elements with funny medical cartoons and then there's our entertainment section where we would give you a list of movies/events/shows in your city so that u can relax once in a while You can also express your views regarding exams, pattern, new rules, and controversies through our “Raise your voice” section. You can also sell, buy or borrow entrance prep books through our sell/buy/borrow section. Students who have cleared their exams can sell their books to juniors . Books can also be borrowed responsibly through the ad in the magazine if you are studying in the same library and yet don't know each other (new way of making a study group too). There are a few high yield topics and recent advances that would add to your academic section. Our USP is also “poster section” which can be stuck to your room wall for revision of important topics. We hope to add few more interesting sections as the time passes byWe wish to be by your side in this journey and make ita successful one. We sign out with the great words of Kargil martyr Capt. Manoj Kumar Pandey “SOME GOALS ARE SO WORTHY ITS GLORIOUS EVEN TO FAIL” So keep trying and keep going DREAM.CHASE. REPEAT. Wishing you tonnes of luck DR.JAYADATT.G.PAWAR Editor, founder Crossroadz & team BREAKING GOOD Effective strategy to crack the PG entrance exam! By Dr. Bipin Daga MBBS,MD(radio), FRCR(UK) Editor's Note: Dr.Bipin daga as we all know is an eminent faculty at various coaching classes in our country teaching Radiology. When we first asked him to write his inspiring story he readily agreed and patted our back to take this kind of initiative, Read his story and the strategy to crack PG entrances efficiently. wish to share my personal story first! did my UG from NKPSIMS, Nagpur and during my under graduation | used to teach my juniors sometimes in clinics about both theory and practical aspects. (I think lot many of us dotthis to help our juniors). Whenever | appeared for any competitive exam be it State PG, All india, AIIMS, PGI, CMC Vellore, JIPMER or MANIPAL PG Entrance Exams, | used to memorize and recollect and jot down all mcq’s after the exams and later my colleagues would photocopy the same, Then a friend of mine suggested me to email these questions to a book publisher so that a book could be published for all entrance goers where they could find possible/similar questions next time they appear for any exam. So, | compiled all the questions properly during my residency and it was done .At the same time | started teaching at Bhatia Coaching classes, Vidyasagar classes and later on went to teach at PGEI, JAMS, Adrplexus. Few years back we started a venture called PGEI and today we are coaching many students in India. | never imagined myself doing these things but although | had a poor IQ, I had that zeal to work hard and try to get a PG, then I could doit and today I'mable to help various other students to fulfiltheir PG dreams. It'stimenow to remember that you should be standing in first SO ranks in the upcoming all India and DNB exams and within 10 ranks in AlIMS, JIPMER of PGI/.¢ in institutes of national importance. So, start working hard and smart. Allthe very best to you guys! Here are some lines about the preparation strategy for the various medical PG entrance exams: Going through all subject wise guides with explanations twice during the year of preparation is crucial. First reading should preferably consist of solving mcQs and reading explanation properly and trying to retain it. This part should ideally take maximurn 4 months (say Aprilto July). From August onwards you have several things to do in addition to the revision or second reading of the subject wise guides. During the revision which should start from first August, possibly 3-4 things are to be done by dividing each day of revision into slots. First slot should be allotted for the revision of the subject wise guides. if not all, at least high yielding ones and tough ones must be revised. Second slot should be for solving papers from Kalam books DNB+\- NEET recalled mcqs (although authentic ones not Available}, Third slot should be for solving minimum last 5 years AlIMS and PGI papers). Fourth slot can be for reading from concise reviews or short notes from ROAMS/or Sure successin PG/or platinum notes/. Those who are preparing voraciously for AIIMS and PGI should have second reading of these papers ,if possible in November and while doing so, one should solve papers as if appearing in the actual exam and noting the MCQs which went wrong and going through those topics quickly which were wrong. By doing this not only that previous papers are done well, but frequently asked topics are also understood well. If during the years of UG short subjects were not read well, then concentrate more on short subjects. Major subjects generally we concentrate more during our UG as well during preparations and short subjects we tend to lag, so it's good to concentrate on them during the PG preparation. if possible, not essential, apart from basic repeats doing thoroughly well from the subject wise guides, the text and tables asked in previous exams should help the maximum. Remember, on an average around 25 % Questions are repeated ditto, around 25% Questions are from the topics on which MCQs have asked in previous exams. 259% Qs are from the matter in the vicinity of the topics asked previously and 25% are sortofnew. P.S: Even in these last few months ifone studies with pure dedication and efficiently- DNB or AIPGMEE, can be cleared quite well with flying colours. Lastly, lam Thankful to the CROSSROADZ TEAM and best wishes for students all over the india!! Study harder and smarter!!If you have any query or help needed students can write me at vipindaga@gmail.com. cya, Dr Bipin Valchandji Daga MD, DNB, FRCR (UX). WINNERS SAGA Dr Dhaval Gohil NIMHANS- 4” rank (post MBBS) Editor's note: Dr.Dhaval Gohil other than being a topper is also an extremely humble gentleman. When we requested him to express his inspiring breath taking journey to top one of the country's top most exams, he was more than happy to help. He believes in hard work and helping others is always his priority. Now, breeze through his journey and if you ever dreamed of beinga neurosurgeon hereitis!! My preparation started out only after finishing my internship. | was totally disoriented about many "how to?...."!! Finally, after many experiments by trial and error method ,| could clear the exam. But it's never too late However; it doesn't mean ‘that those who are doing their MBBS should think that they should also start preparing after internship. You see “Early bird PREPARATION Preparation for NIMHANS entrance is very specific, questions will be asked with almost equal distribution in neurology and MBBS basic subjects involving pharmacology, physiology and biochemistry and so on. There are no foolish Questions regarding date, time etc. for which uneed to mug upamilliontimes. Your preparation time can be split into: 2 months for neuro-psychiatry and 6 months for other MBBS subjects that would be sufficient. f you manage to slog for 8-10 hours of daily regular study with fearless attitude of a Gir Lion (since im a Gujarati) and keep yourself motivated so that you put in consistent effort daily and rewards will be fruitful. BOOKS | really avoided books as | loved videos, but you can certainly study books which gives you glimpse of Harrison for which | studied Dr Ajay mathur's book which is a conscious meq collection based on lines of Harrison. The Class notes from coaching or booklet of your own notes for minor subjects is good. A BIG BOOK is never required to crack any entrance. Don't end up getting frustrated trying to read and revise huge goliathal books. ‘The Kaplan videos (generally the USMLE PREP GUYS HAVE IT, BORROW IT} are really nice. For physiology those of Dr Hussein sattar can be watched. The very famous Dr Nazeeb videos for basic neurology section are great. Totally there are 150 questions and 4 candidates will be singled out based on merit, so score difference of 0.something can put youin and out of the selection list. So, utilise your time cleverly Seats and duration of course*: No of seats post MBBS 4 Years No of seats post MS 6 Years Duration of course post MBBS 5 Years Duration of course post MS 3 Years *Exams are usually conducted in the month of March ABOUT NEUROSURGERY Never choose neurosurgery if you are just attracted towards glamour in its name.
