Groundwater Prospects and Sustainability Mapping
Ground water prospects maps are prepared on 1:50,000 scale for entire country in 4 phases. The ground
water controlling parameters such as Lithology, Geomorphology, Geological structures extracted using
satellite data are integrated to delineate the aquifers. Recharge to the aquifer is estimated based on
hydrology and sample observation wells.

Ground Water Quality Mapping

Ground water quality maps are
prepared by interpolating ground
water quality data available with line
departments
of
the
Ministry.
Hydrogeomorphic units (Aquifer) are
used as the unit for mapping.
The ground water
prospects,
sustainability and quality maps are
useful for identifying
i) potable
ground water sources for supplying
drinking water to rural habitations in
the country and ii)for constructing
site-specific recharge structures to
improve the sustainability of drinking
water sources.

Aquifer mapping
Developed conceptual 2D/3D model for aquifer
mapping using RGNDWM data. A pilot study in
parts of AP is being carried out in collaboration
with CGWB.

Ground water assessment in alluvial terrain using

D-INSAR techniques
Terrain displacement map for Lucknow area is
created using SAR differential Interferometry to
study relation between land subsidence and
ground water. Evaluation of the results is in
progress.

Estimation of groundwater storage change

using satellite based gravity data
Water storage change has implications for
sustainable water resource management.
Satellite Gravimetry/remote sensing techniques
are being used in monitoring basin and regional
hydrological processes. Data from space based
Gravity field Missions like GRACE and GOCE are
being explored in such estimations along with
Ground truth data.

Development of drinking water security plans

Development of village water security plan
methodology is in progress using RGNDWM GW
prospect datasets. A pilot study in parts of Jhansi
Dist., UP is being carried out.
