Dockery Calls for Hiring Freeze and Eliminating Vacant Positions in State Government

Tallahassee ʹ To get state spending under control, Florida government should implement a hiring freeze
and eliminate all budgeted vacant positions, which could save the state $150 million a year, Republican
Candidate for Governor Paula Dockery said Tuesday.

͞The Orlando Sentinel says some state government jobs have been funded, but kept open, for six years!
Where has that money gone?͟ Dockery asked. ͞This is a clear example of wasteful spending and a lack of
accountability in state government.͟

The newspaper reported that 20 percent of the open jobs have been vacant at least six months. ͞If
we͛ve done without these positions that long, we can do without them altogether,͟ Dockery said.

Neither should government be growing during this economic downturn, she said, referring to the
governor͛s proposal to add 1,400 new government jobs.

͞Rather than grow the size of government, we should return that money to taxpayers and business
owners to build new jobs in the free-market economy,͟ Dockery said.

͞When it comes to increasing taxes or reducing state spending, I side with saving taxpayer dollars!͟
