Problem Set: Gaseous Fuels 12-27-2014

[1] A pure hydrocarbon gas at 70F is burnt in a furnace giving a flue gas containing 10.8% CO 2, 3.8%
O2 and the rest nitrogen. Calculate the following:
[a] The atomic ratio, H/C, and from this the formula of the fuel.
[b] If the combustion gases leave the furnace at normal pressure and 800F, calculate the
volumetric ratio, combustion gas/fuel gas.
[c] If the furnace burns 200 lb of the fuel per hour, calculate the volume of combustion gases in
cubic feet per minute.
[2] The exhaust from a Diesel engine, using a high-grade hydrocarbon fuel oil, shows 10.2% CO2 7.9%
O2 and the rest nitrogen. The analysis was made with care in an Orsat, using mercury as the
confining liquid in the measuring burette, and there is every reason to believe that the analysis is
substantially correct. From these data calculate:
[a] The weight ratio of hydrogen to carbon in the fuel oil
[b] The percent by weight of carbon in the oil
[c] The pounds of dry air used per pound of oil burnt in the engine
[d] The moles of exhaust gas discharged from the engine per pound of fuel oil burnt
