Dear Parents(s) or Guardian(s):
We are currently planning a Grade 5/6 fieldtrip to Jasper and Kootenay National Park for our study on the impact of fires on forests. This activity will occur on June 2nd to June 3rd, 2015. The bus will leave the school at 8:00 a.m. and arrive at Jasper National Park at 11:00 a.m. for the fieldtrip. The students will participate in the activities described below, and depart from Kootaney Park at 2:00pm to return to the school at 5:00 p.m. Students will be exploring Jasper National Park, Kootaney National Park and Lake Louis as a natural setting to explore the differences between two burn sites and a non-burn site. They will use their observations to assess the health of the forest eco-system. Students will also be given time to film their Public Service Announcements for their final assignment in this Unit. As a reminder, we will be presenting these projects on June 10 th at Parent Showcase Night at the gymnasium at 6:00pm. While some degree of risk is associated in an off-site activity, I have outlined specific areas of concern on the Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk form. Please ensure your son or daughter: Brings appropriate articles of clothing (including layers and comfortable walking shoes) Bring a packed lunch for the bus trip to Jasper National Park (the rest of the meals will be provided by the school) Over-night items (including toothbrush, pajamas, clothing for the following day etc.) We strongly discourage students from bringing valuable items such as iPods, cellphones and laptops. Five teachers from the school will be supervising your children for this activity. We are looking to bring seven parent volunteers on this field trip. If you are able to volunteer please contact us at the school as soon as possible. We especially have a high-need for male volunteers for overnight supervision. On field trips students are expected to be on their best behavior. However, if a severe problem should arise, parents will be called and asked to pick up their child. The cost for this off-site activity is $50 for transportation. This price will include transportation, accommodation and food. You are asked to complete the attached Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk form and return it by May 27 th, 2015 if you consent to your child attending this off-site activity. If your child is unable to participate in this activity, he/she will participate in the regular learning designated in his timetable provided at the school. Information about the administrative regulations governing these forms can be found at www.cbe.ab.ca / Policies / Administrative Regulations/ AR3027. If you have any questions about the activity, please do not hesitate to email me at education520@cbe.ca or call me at 403-777- 7469. I am looking forward to seeing the students engaged in this wonderful learning opportunity. Sincerely, Melissa Piwowarczyk
