Five Themes of Geography Place

By Tamara Long (7B)

Place is one of the five themes of geography. Place tells us what its like by
explaining the physical and human characteristics. Place tells us what its like.
Place will explain why that place is special and what makes it different. For
instance, Indonesia is special because of its wealth in culture. There are two
types of Place, human characteristics and physical characteristics. Human
characteristics are everything man made including buildings, machines, ideas,
religions, etc. I made a pie chart showing the religious make up of Jakarta.
This chart has given me a lot of information. For example, the majority of
people in Jakarta are Muslim. Physical characteristics are everything natural
in a place. Physical characteristics include landscapes, water bodies, land
bodies, animal and plant life, the climate, etc. To illustrate, in Global Jaya you
can find rambutan trees and kamboja trees. I made two graphs of the physical
characteristics of Jakarta. I made a graph of the average percipitation and a
graph of the average temperature. I now know that Jakarta is hottest in
October. I also know that Jakarta gets the most rain in January. So, place is a
theme of geography that tells us what a certain place is like. I made 3 place models
that helped me understand and explain what is place.
