English 9: Dramatic Interpretation


Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”

Dramatic Interpretation Learning Task (50 pts.)


 Teams select a portion of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” to prepare
and perform a dramatic interpretation.

 Identify the portion of the play by Act, Scene and line numbers. Scenes must be
five (5) minutes minimum and seven (7) minutes maximum.

 Once the facilitator’s have approved the portion of the play, teams are to translate
their scene from Old English (Elizabethan) to Modern English (Contemporize).

 The written portion hardcopy is due March 23rd for final review prior to
rehearsing for dramatic presentation. (50 pts.)

 Once the facilitator’s have approved the translation, teams will rehearse and
prepare for their onstage presentation.

 Stage directions (blocking), characterization, memorization, vocals, and minor


props will be assessed during dramatic presentation.
o Stage Directions
 Stage Left, Stage Right, Center Stage, Down Left, Down Right,
Down Center, Up Left, Up Right, Up Center
o Characterization
 Define age, action, reaction
o Memorization
 Know the lines of your character and action for scene presentation
o Vocals
 Inflection, projection, articulation
o Minor Props
 Large and small props needed to enhance the scene

 Production of Dramatic Interpretations due April 15, 2010. (100 pts.)
