AmericanmilitaryinstallationsinthePacific.ThemostdevastatingstrikecameatPearlHarbor,the
HawaiiannavalbasewheremuchoftheUSPacificFleetwasmoored.Inatwohourattack,Japanese
warplanessankordamaged18warshipsanddestroyed164aircraft.Over2,400servicemenand
civilianslosttheirlives.

ThoughstunnedbytheeventsofDecember7,Americanswerealsoresolute.OnDecember8,
PresidentRooseveltaskedCongresstodeclarewaragainstJapan.Thedeclarationpassedwithjust
onedissentingvote.Threedayslater,GermanyandItaly,alliedwithJapan,declaredwarontheUnited
States.Americawasnowdrawnintoaglobalwar.IthadalliesinthisfightmostimportantlyGreat
BritainandtheSovietUnion.ButthejobthenationfacedinDecember1941wasformidable.

WhenthewarstartedIwastwentysix,unmarried,andworkingasacosmeticsclerkinadrugstorein
LosAngeles.Iwasrunningthewholedepartment,handlingtheinventoryandallthat.Itseemed

brotherinlawandmysister.Iwas19andmyfiancehadjoinedtheArmyandwasinWashingtonstate.
Inmymind,SanDiegosoundedclosertoWashingtonthanColorado,andIthoughtthatwouldmakeit
easierforustoseeeachother.Ialsowantedtodosomethingtohelpthecountrygetthewaroverwith
andIknewtherewerealotofdefensejobsinSanDiego.

IappliedforajobatRohrAircraft,andtheysentmetoasixweektrainingschool.Youlearnedhowto
useanelectricdrill,howtodoprecisiondrilling,howtorivet.Ihadntseenanythinglikearivetgunor
anelectricdrillmotorbefore...ButIwasaneagerlearner,andIsoonbecameanoutstandingriveter.

AtRohr,IworkedrivetingtheboomdoorsonP38s[afighterplane].Theywerebig,long,hugedoors
thathadthreeorfourthicknessesofskins,andyouhadtorivetthoseskinstogether.Everythinghadto
beprecise.Itallhadtopassinspection

IstillthinkitisabigmistaketoevacuatealltheJapanese.Segregationistheleastdesirablethingthat
couldhappenanditcertainlyisgoingtoincreasetheproblemoffuturesocialadjustments.Howcanwe
expecttodevelopAmericanizationwhentheyareallputtogetherwiththestigmaofdisloyaltypointedat
them[theJapanese]?IamconvincethattheNisei[secondgenerationJapaneseAmericans]could
becomegoodAmericansandwillbe,iftheyarenottreatedwithasmuchsuspicion.
