D.C. Metro Area Drivers are the Most Unknowledgeable Drivers

WASHINGTON Drivers in the District of Columbia are ranked as the most unknowledgeable
drivers in the nation, according to the results released today from the GMAC Insurance National
Drivers Test.

This year, the average score of all drivers is 77.9 percent compared to the Districts low average
of 71.8 percent. Maryland drivers were also low on the list coming in 49th place with an average
of 73.3 percent.

The GMAC Insurance Study showed that drivers in the D.C. metro are the most
unknowledgeable drivers, and would not be able to pass the written drivers tests if taken today.

Lauren Graham, a teacher and mother in Montgomery County, finds the results disturbing. As a
mother I dont want my son to turn 16 and get his license. It scares me that there are so many
drivers in the area who dont know basic driving knowledge, Graham said.

The GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test has become the benchmark for Americas driving
IQ, said Scott Eckman, chief marketing officer, GMAC Insurance. All

Americans need a refresher course when it comes to rules of the road and it beings with
education. Were hoping this years GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test results will inspire
drivers to arm themselves with the knowledge they need to stay safe.

Many people on the road still lack basic driving knowledge, which can lead to dangerous driving
habits.

Without critical driving comprehension, many drivers run the risk of increased accidents or near
accidents, where they often come to the realization of their lack of knowledge on rules of the
road. Over 2010 and 2011 in the District, Maryland and Virginia, 1,541 people died in single-car
crashes.

The Test showed that the Northeast is the worst driving region.

The annual survey poll polled 5,130 licensed drivers, from 50 states and the District of
Columbia. TNS, the worlds largest custom research agency, administered the test online.
National data was weighted to percentage of state population, age, gender and ethnicity.
