Crafty Women and the Hierarchy of the Arts

AMT/PHL 254 Aesthetics

This reading response was done after we read the Lecture of two of the greatest feminist
writers: Parker and Pollock. The reading was called, Crafty Women and the Hierarchy of the
Arts. In this task I had to do a reading and respond by summing up the reading using important
keys points that I could catch. In addition, this reading was interesting for me, because it was
about how the two classifications, Fine Arts and Crafts have affected how women are seen in the
arts. Also, I learned how through our history women have been steered more to the crafts and
fine arts are left to men. This reading showed how womens art has always been considered
beneath mens art in the hierarchy of art. Furthermore, I could connect my reading response with
the visit that we did in our class period to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where many of the
paintings were made by men. This reading helped me to understand what I was always
wondering when I saw many paintings and noticed that their creators were almost always men.
This reading provided me the context I needed to understand the history of womens position in
the arts.

In conclusion, through this project, I learned not only the history in general of art but also
the position of women in this field. I think that as a student of art it is extremely important to
know the role of each genre and their contribution to the world. In addition, this helped me to
know the changes that have taken women over the years. Moreover, as a future educator of my
own dance academy, I should promote equality, making sure that discrimination of genders
between the students and the faculty does not occur. In other words, anyone regardless of gender
can make any artistic work no matter their sex.
