Shrek The Musical

Part of my career as a student in the Performing Arts major at Wheelock

College included the lucky chance to do an internship experience. I was able to fill
out an agreement where I took responsibility and committed to learning about what a
choreographer does in the field of theater. I helped during rehearsals and learned
about the process of creating choreography for a production. I kept a daily journal, as
a record of all my activities about what happened and learned through the process of
making the dances and teaching them to the actors in each production; I was able to
assist three different production processes. But one of my favorite productions was
Shrek The Musical, which was the last production I worked in Spring 2015. As a
matter of fact, this production, being musical, required more time and patience. A
musical production is not just about showing a story, but also about how all the
elements of theater come together to make the story come to lives. Additionally, my
participation in this production was to learn and help to the choreographer to teach
the performers the choreography. In this production the styles of dance used were:
jazz, ballroom steps, among others.

Through this process, I learned that creating choreography for a theater

production is kind of different in comparison to creating a choreography for any other
performance. But what the difference of the process of Shrek and others, is that in
Shrek the dancers/performers had to be prepared to deal with acting and dancing;
both go hand in hand. For this reason, I admired the performance of the actors. To
conclude, they showed the audience that it is crucial being multitalented to dominate
different fields, in the same profession.

In conclusion, in a matter of my career, this kind of internship helped me

develop values such as tolerance, respect, creative ability and responsibility.
Furthermore, this was a great opportunity for me, because in the future I wish to
become a dance teacher and build my own dance school. That experience was
positive because through this internship I could see how to use a production like
Shrek The Musical as an educational tool, providing a possibility for students to have
a great academic achievement, developing their personality and strengthening their
emotional area, also discovering the artist within them.
