Inhaled budesonide at doses of 800 μg/day for six or more months was associated with alteration of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to ACTH stimulation in 3 out of 20 severe asthmatic children. Signs of asthma include frequent wheezing more than once a month, activity-induced cough or wheeze, coughing at night without viral infections, absence of seasonal variation in wheezing, and symptoms persisting after age 3 or worsening with triggers like allergens, exercise, infections, or tobacco smoke. Diagnosis is supported if symptoms improve with asthma medication.
