Jim Berry, of Winfield,

said he knew from a very
young age that he would
join the United States
Navy.
Berry's father Robert
and his identical twin
Raymond both served
in the Navy; Robert
for eight years while
Raymond made a career
of it and stayed for 20.
"They even served on
the same ship together,"
Jim Berry said. Another
uncle on his mother's
side, James Roark, also

served in the Navy for 20

years.
Berry enlisted in the
Navy Reserves at Strother
Field in 1963 when he
was a senior at Winfield
High School.
"You know, lots of guys
went into the service after
they finished high school,
especially if they needed
extra guidance, and some
needed more guidance
than others," Berry said
with a laugh.
In February 1964 Berry
was sent to San Diego,
Calif. to attend Class

he took three months
of basic training. From
there he was shipped to
Treasure Island to wait on
his ship to be built.
Upon completion of
the ship, they were loaded up and headed for the
Marshall Islands, in the
Pacific by the Hawaiian
Islands. Actually, they
were all over the Pacific,
Thompson said. He was
on a tanker that carried
100,000 barrels of fuel.
He had a fuel station line
to ships that he helped.

"We were usually in
