ME 384 REPORT FORMAT. Each group member will individually prepare a report on each experiment. The reports must be single spaced and should be created using word processing and computer generated graphs and tables. The reports should consist of the following sections: Cover page/ Abstract/Introduction/Theory/ Procedure/ Data/Analysis/ Conclusions, and References Cover Page: The first page should include the experiment title, course title, course number & section, author's name, and date. Abstract: Briefly explain the intend and objectives of the experiment, how it was conducted, what the results were, and how the results compared with theory and those reported in literature, what are the % errors. The procedure is not mentioned in abstract unless the procedure is the objective of the experimentation; such designing an experiment or proving an experiment a procedure for a particular experiment results in better results. Introduction: The introduction should describe the purpose and motivation of the experiment, the general approach to be taken, and any background information (such as. theory or other results) which might provide insight into what experimental results may be expected. Include all the figures, charts, etc. that help in explaining the purpose and motivation of the experiments. Theory: Explain the theory involving the experiment. The formulas involved and the resulting equations and ending theoretical results. Includes all the figure, etc. that is needed to help explain the theory and the results. Procedure and Data: This section should provide a description of the equipment used and the procedure followed to perform the experiment. All the relevant data should be collected and tabulated for presentation and ease of calculation and assessment, Analysis and Conclusions: The raw experimental results should be analyzed to determine any trends - for example linear ot exponential behavior. The results should also ‘be compared to other experimental or theoretical results whenever possible. Such Comparisons can be used to illustrate phy'sical principles as well as to isolate and explain any discrepancies or difficulties, which may be found. This section should include a sub-section: Sample Calculation. It is very important to include sample calculations for clarity of computations and for ease of understanding and assessing. References: The parenthetical format for including references should be used. For example: "The development of a thermal boundary layer is clearly illustrated by Jones (1987)." “Several examples of this behavior have been observed (Jones, 1987; Smith, 1990)." ‘These sources would then be included in the References section at the end of the report, using a technically acceptable format. Almost any technical textbook would be a good place to find such a format for most types of references. Figures, Tables and Equations: Each figure (graphs, drawings, etc.) and table should be included in the text or immediately following the section in which itis first referred to. No ‘figures or tables should be included which are not mentioned somewhere in the text of the report. Figures and tables should be numbered separately (e.g. figure 1, figure 2, table 1, etc.) and each should have a descriptive caption. Equations should be included in the text, on a separate line with equation number at the right margin. Equations should be referred to by number, and any new symbols should be explained, including units when appropriate. Be sure to give proper reference to any sources used to obtain equations.
