ROOM 149
SS8 JAPAN ASSIGNMENT: "BACK TO THE FUTURE"

What did medieval Japanese culture and civilization look like a thousand years
ago? And, in comparison how does Modern Japanese culture look today?
These two "BIG" questions are the bases of our trip "Back to the Future".
Throughout this assignment we will be doing a compare and contrast of ANCIENT
Japanese culture to Today's present culture. Many influences help change culture
such as: geography, climate, contact with other cultures, as well as conflict with
other cultures. Your trip through time will expose many different cultural idioms
that have existed in Japanese culture for eons and others which have only existed
for a short period of time. These changes have had a huge influence on the
Acculturation of Japanese culture. Your trip "Back to the Future" will be to expose
and discuss these changes and present them to the class in an academic manner.
In a team of two you will need to choose a component of culture and show the past
in comparison to the present. There are several options on how you can do this.
One in a power point or video presentation, another would be in a tri-poster
presentation.
Research: keep a journal of your research. Log all books, websites and resources in
a bibliography. Look for changes, differences, adaptations, cultural exchanges,
reasons for change. Record in your own words. Remember plagiarism is the direct
copying of the author's words or ideas. Journal should be on loose leaf paper and
in a duo-tang. One per group.
