Activity Description: This activity is designed to encourage creative expression, organization,
practice language and writing skills as well as social skills. This specific activity is designed for
children or adolescents in a school, day program or camp. The participants will be asked to work
together to come up with a theme for the newsletter issue. Depending on the age of the
participants they may decide to pick their own article topics. Encourage the participants to seek
out a mentor (adult or older peer) to interview or work on the article with.
Leadership Considerations Facilitators of this should be open to providing as much or as little
support as the participants need. Additionally, this activity would require a good support system,
whether it is through other people working with in the group, parents or peers. This activity is
meant to be educational, but not so challenging that participants feel overwhelmed.
Adaptations For participants, who have cognitive impairments of any age, offer topics for
articles. If needed, the facilitator can offer an outline or perhaps leading questions to get the
writer started. Additionally, instead of creating printed newsletter, the activity can be turned into
more of a social activity where participants work on their article and then come back to the group
to share their findings. This could be especially beneficial if the participants decide on topics
they would like to learn more about, thus increasing the educational benefits of the activity.
