Introduction
It terms comes from Greek,

Fern species live in a wide variety of habitats.

Life Cycle of Pteridophyta

Sporophytes of seed plants, those of ferns

Stems
consist of :

The gametophytes of ferns, however, are very different from those of seed plants. They typically consist of

Many type of spore of ferns, based from

shape, size, and the properties of ferns. Based
on this it can be determined from homospore,
heterospore, or terrestrial fern that has two
kinds of fern properties.

The are few kinds arragement of sporangium of

ferns; there are arranged in sorus, strobilus, and
sporocarpium.

Classification
Their classification based on this phylogeny
divides extant ferns into five classes:
Psilotopsida (whisk ferns and ophioglossoid
ferns), about 92 species
Lycopsida
Equisetopsida (horsetails), about 15 species
Marattiopsida, about 150 species
Polypodiopsida (leptosporangiate ferns), over
9000 species

Class Psilotopsida
Psilotopsida is a class of fern-like plants.

Order Ophioglossales
oFamily Ophioglossaceae (incl.
Botrychiaceae, Helminthostachyaceae)
Order Psilotales
oFamily Psilotaceae (incl.
Tmesipteridaceae)

Class Lycopociopsida
A second class of fern is Lycopociopsida. It consist of four ordo
and four family there are :
Order Lycopodiales
oFamily Lycopodineae
Order Selaginellales
oFamily Selaginellaceae
Order Lepidondendrales
oFamily Lepidodendraceae
Order Isoetales
oFamily Isoetaceae

Class Equiseptopsida
Equisetopsida comes from the word equus that means
horse and seta meaning stalk.
Class Equisetopsida have sporangium that arranged in
strobilus and has a shape like a horse's tail. Elater spores have as
many as 4 pieces. Example of Equisetopsida is Equisetum.
Class Equisetopsida
Order Equisetales
oFamily Equisetaceae

Class Marrattiopsida
The Marattiaceae is one of two groups of ferns
traditionally known as eusporangiate fern, meaning
that the sporangium is formed from a group of cells
vs the leptosporangium in which there is a single
initial cell.

Class Marattiopsida
Order Marattiales
oFamily Marattiaceae
(incl. Angiopteridaceae,
Christenseniaceae, Danaeaceae,
Kaulfussiaceae)

Class Polypodiopsida
These ferns are also called
leptosporangiate because their sporangia
arose from a single epidermal cell and not
from a group of cells as in eusporangiate
ferns.
Class Pteridopsida [Filicopsida,
Polypodiopsida]
Many leptosporangiate ferns have an annulus around the
sporangium, which ejects the spores.
This is the orders of this class:
Order Osmundales
Family Osmundaceae
Order Hymenophyllales
Family Hymenophyllaceae (incl. Trichomanaceae)

Order Gleicheniales
Family Gleicheniaceae (incl. Dicranopteridaceae,
Stromatopteridaceae)
Family Dipteridaceae (incl. Cheiropleuriaceae)
Family Matoniaceae
Order Schizaeales
Family Lygodiaceae
Family Anemiaceae (incl. Mohriaceae)
Family Schizaeaceae
Order Salviniales
Family Marsileaceae (incl. Pilulariaceae)
Family Salviniaceae (incl. Azollaceae)

Order Cyatheales
Family Thyrsopteridaceae
Family Loxsomataceae
Family Culcitaceae
Family Plagiogyriaceae
Family Cibotiaceae
Family Cyatheaceae (incl. Alsophilaceae, Hymenophyllopsidaceae)
Family Dicksoniaceae (incl. Lophosoriaceae)
Family Metaxyaceae

Order Polypodiales
oFamily Lindsaeaceae (incl. Cystodiaceae, Lonchitidaceae)
oFamily Saccolomataceae
oFamily Dennstaedtiaceae (incl. Hypolepidaceae,
Monachosoraceae, Pteridiaceae)
oFamily Pteridaceae (incl. Pellaeaceae, Adiantaceae,
Ceratopteridaceae, Cryptogrammaceae)
oFamily Aspleniaceae
oFamily Thelypteridaceae
oFamily Woodsiaceae (incl. Athyriaceae, Cystopteridaceae)
oFamily Blechnaceae (incl. Stenochlaenaceae)
oFamily Onocleaceae
oFamily Dryopteridaceae (incl. Aspidiaceae, Bolbitidaceae,
Elaphoglossaceae, Hypodematiaceae, Peranemataceae)
oFamily Oleandraceae
oFamily Davalliaceae
oFamily Lomariopsidaceae (incl. Nephrolepis)
oFamily Polypodiaceae (incl. Drynariaceae, Grammitidaceae,
Gymnogrammitidaceae, Loxogrammaceae, Platyceriaceae,
Pleurisoriopsidaceae)
oFamily Tectariaceae

THE COMPARISON BETWEEN CLASS

AND PHYLUM
Class of
Pteridophyta

Comparison

Pteridopsida

Primitive fern, there were leaves

yet, most of representative are
vanished.

Lycopsida

Leaves shape like hair or pinnate

and the branch looks like wire
with the pedestal of leaves are
spread.
Sporangium arranged in strobilus
and shaped in tip of branch.

Equisetopsida

The leaves transparent and

pinnate shape, craggy structure
in a circle.
Braches are segmented and
trunk.

Class of
Pteridophyta
Marattiopsida

Comparison
Many of them have massive,
fleshy rootstocks and the largest
known fronds of any fern.
The sporangium is formed from a
group of cells vs the
leptosporangium in which there is
a single initial cell.

Polypodiopsida

Big size of leaves, the pedestal of

leaves pinnated.
In type of land fern, formed
sporangium in sorus. While in type
of water fern, formed sporangium
in spokarpium.
Young leaves curl or rolled up,
and the sorus formed under the
leaves surface.
