K-3 Instructions for Patterns:

Create a physical model of the stages/steps/phases depicted in the diagram

Extend this model to the next stage/step/phase
Predict by drawing the next stage/step/phase; Verify by building it
Describe how you found the next step in pattern
For 3rd grade:
Record data about the pattern using a T-chart
Determine the value of the output (number of blocks or toothpicks, perimeter, etc) for the 10th step; 100th step; nth step
State the Rule for the pattern
Note: For this age group, you need to be very careful with your patterns they need to be easy for them to determine the rule
such as doubles, doubles plus 1, add 5 to the step #, etc.

Instructions for Patterns (Middle Level):

Create a physical model of the stages/steps/phases depicted in the diagram

Extend this model to the next stage/step/phase
Predict by drawing the next stage/step/phase; Verify by building it
Describe the recursive/iterative rule for finding the next step in pattern
Record data about the pattern using a T-chart
Determine the value of the output (number of blocks or toothpicks, perimeter, etc) for the 10th step; 100th step; nth step
State the explicit Rule for the pattern
