Mathematics/Grade 6
Factoring Multi-Digit Numbers
Objectives: The student will apply division of multi-digit numbers to compute the factors
of those multi-digit numbers.
College and Career Ready Standard: 6.NS.B.2
The Number System 6. NS
Compute fluently with multidigit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
2. Compute fluently with multidigit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
B) Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
Anticipatory Set:
(Bell ringer)- The students will work individually when they come into class on the bell
work while the teacher takes attendance. Auditory signal is Pencils down, eyes up and
the students will drop their pencils and look at the teachers.
Think back to how we used to divide big numbers with long division. Complete each of
the following problems on a sheet of notebook paper and be prepared to share your
answers.
1. 60/3
2. 32/2
3. 75/5
4. 100/20
5. 148/4
6. 72/6
7. 64/8
Go over the correct quotients by calling on students using Ask-Pause-Call.
Segue: Today we are going to use division to help us find factors of multi-digit numbers.
Information: The students will take out a piece of notebook paper and write down a
word that will be important to know for this lesson and also follow along with the
examples the teacher will do on the board. (Factor- prime numbers that multiply together
to make another number.)

Modeling: The teacher will work through each problem on the whiteboard and the
students will follow along on their papers.
o Example 1: Breanna will do a problem on the whiteboard while checking
for understanding after each step. Dustin circulates the room checking for
understanding by asking what two numbers they used to get 24.

o Example 2: Dustin will do a problem on the whiteboard while checking

for understanding after each step. Breanna circulates the room checking
for understanding by asking students what two numbers they used to get
36.

Guided practice: The students and the teachers will work together to find the
factors for two different multi-digit numbers.
o Example 1: Breanna will lead an example that the students will fill in each
step with her. Dustin circulates the classroom checking for understanding
by asking students what two numbers they used to get 30.

o Example 2: Dustin will lead an example that the students will fill in each
step with him. Breanna circulates the classroom checking for
understanding by asking students what two numbers they used to get 18.

Individual Practice: The students will work with their shoulder partners on a
whiteboard to find the factors for two multi-digit numbers and then they will
show their answers to the teachers. *Teachers check for understanding of
directions.

o Example 1: Breanna and Dustin will present students with a problem to

complete. Both of them will circulate the classroom checking for
understanding by asking students what two numbers they used to get 12.

o Example 2: Breanna and Dustin will present students with a problem to

complete. Both of them will circulate the classroom checking for
understanding by asking students what two numbers they used to get 16.

Segue: Now we are going to use what we just learned with finding factors and find the
greatest common factor of two numbers.
Closure:
Students will complete five problems on a half sheet piece of paper and turn it in to the
teacher as their Ticket Out the Door
Find the factors using a factor tree:
1. 8
2. 20
3. 28
Find the GCF of the two numbers
4. 4 and 6
5. 18 and 9
6. 27 and 33
