Born April 7, 1946 in Arlington, VA


Special Effects Artist

Managed all parts of his special effects (SFX) workshop

Was mostly a make-up artist himself

Died June 15, 2008


Example movies: Iron Man, Avatar, Pearl Harbor, Batman
Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Aliens, Friday the 13th (and the
sequels), Jurassic Park (and the sequels), The Terminator (and
the sequels), and so much more

Fan of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror movies.


Was shooting monster films since he was thirteen.
Majored in fine arts at University of Virginia.

Minored in drama- originally tried to be an actor

Applied for an apprenticeship with Robert Schiffer

One of two out of 200 people chosen for the job

Worked on the make-up in the 1972 film Gargoyles.

Won an Emmy for his work.

Started when James Cameron hired Stan for the film The Terminator

Workload was too much for Stan Winston alone, so he formed a team to help him.

There were many different models of the Terminator made as the cyborg got more
of its skin taken off (The sequel T2 featured four different full robotic models).

First works after Terminator were of alien films, including the action film
Aliens and Predator.

Famous for work in Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Jurassic Park. Built fullsized Tyrannosaurus Rex, Raptor, and Triceratops robots for the Jurassic Park
Film.

Created multiple other films between 1993 (after Jurassic Park) and 2005.

Multiple Mediums used.

Started to show signs of illness in 2001, giving his team most


of the responsibilities for the movie A.I. and Jurassic Park 3.
He started to produce more movies from then to 2008.
His sickness turned out to be Myeloma, a cancer in the plasma
cells.
Died in Malibu, CA, aged 62

Art (Particularly in his large blockbusters) well received


amongst many people.
His floor space serves as a three dimensional resume, though
its likely Winston rarely has to sell himself to prospective
producers; they come to him.
Winston wasan icon in the specialized art-science of special

CRITICISM

James Cameron and Steven Steilberg both spoke at Winstons


funeral.
Stan Winston Studios had a name change to Legacy Effects.
His name was featured at the end of Terminator Salvation and
Avatar both start end credits with his company name.
Though his name will probably not be remembered at the end
of the 21st century, his work will.
A documentary about his life, Remembering the Monster Kid :
A Tribute to Stan Winston, was produced.
