Construct a written response in which they write a meaningful connection to their
text

Materials/ Resources/ Technology needs:


Mean Soup by Betsy Everitt, reading journals, Activboard

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Clump and gather on floor rug for read aloud of Mean Soup.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
1. Teacher will read aloud Mean Soup the whole way once without any interruptions.
2. Teacher will read through book again, pausing to point out significant literary features
of the text then model writing a response in which a personal connection to the book
is made.
3. Students will return to desk and begin writing personal connections response in
reading journals.
4. Responses will be shared partners or whole class.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific): monitor and observe students to ensure they are
writing and participating
Reteach (alternative used as needed): review of various literary elements (climax, theme,
etc.)

Closure: books can sometimes give us insight into different ways we can resolve our
problems/ frustrations. Authors use various literary elements to help us build mental pictures
Assessment/ Summative Evaluation: check reading journals for personal connection response
to Mean Soup.
Modifications/ Notes: provide sentence stems, work one on one.
