Problems of the Sport Sector

1. Monopoly of one sport viz.cricket has inhibited the development of other sports.
So it is must that funds be channeled equally in all sports.
2. Govt. is not enthusiastic enough about developing sport infrastructure in the
country due to the lack of funds. Encouraging FDI could be away out.
3. Sports in India are not chosen as a sincere career option due lack of (shall i put it
as) job security. You either make it to the playing 11 or your career is at stake.
Govt. could provide an alternative employment as BCCI does.
4. At times all impt. appointments and team selection is based on political
recommendations. Hence, it being a public service involving a high viewership it
could come under the ambit of UPSC.
5. External influences : - Betting, illegal commercial gains
6. Lack of public accountability and public scrutiny.
Solutions

a) Independent Institution : - Make sports authority independent institutions,

devoid of any political interference in any of the subject matter.
b) Structural changes : - members from sports background, management and
previous experience should be recruited
c) Watch on players : - Players should be guided towards legitimate goals and check
on activities, correct if diverted towards unlawful activities.
d) Transparent selection system. = bring sports under the purview of RTI
e) Setting up a tribunal to redress disputes related to sports.
