Naeyc Standard 4: Assessment of Child Progress

Naeyc Standard 4 is Assessment of Child Progress and it pertains to making sure the
child is developing appropriately in all developmental domains. If the child is having some
difficulties, observations and assessments help the teacher know. Observing the child helps both
staff and parents so together they can work to help the child or receive help if needed. I
completed an observation for Child Development 143 in a early childhood classroom. I observed
science and math in the preschool classroom. This allowed me to see how teachers in the
classroom incorporated science in math in the classroom and with the children. I took notes of
what I observed and completed a short paper. Observations are very important when assessing a
child because it allows a teacher to pay specific attention to one child. A teacher can give their
undivided attention to that child when assessing them. This helps the teacher complete her
assessment of the child better.
