Title of Work sample: Historical Figure Presentation and Summary.

Date Completed: Fall 2013

DESCRIBE WORK SAMPLE

We as a class each were assigned a historical figure from our profession. Research was done
about the historical figure and presented to the class as a power point presentation. A written
summary of the information presented was also completed. The summary was all of the
information presented in the power point, as well as, other facts and information. The power
point consisted of the historical figures birthdate, the time period of the figure, what the figure
was best known for, contributions to our profession, and my personal opinion of the historical
figure. The history and philosophy of health education and promotion profession were
represented by each student. This assignment gave insight to where our profession started and
highlighted how far we have come in our future professions.

ALIGNMENT REFLECTION
My historical figure presentation and summary best aligns with Standard 6: Communication The health promoter uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication
techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction. This artifact best
aligns with this standard because I used verbal communication to present my information to the
class. I used nonverbal communication by making eye contact with the class and facing them
while presenting. I used media communication by presenting my information in a power point
presentation. Supportive interaction was used when I asked the class questions at the end of my
presentation. In future presentations, I would choose to use more collaboration in my
presentation. I would get the class more involved by creating a game or activity. The audience
would be more attentive and retain more information if they were fully engaged in the
presentation. This artifact demonstrates competency in communication because I formally
presented my information to the class. I presented information that was relevant to the profession
and the historical figure. I also assured the information was presented to the class well by asking
them quiz questions at the end of the presentation.

Health and Physical Educations Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment

The artifact best aligns with KS3.a.Commicates clearly and accurately.
The candidate's spoken and written language are correct, expressive and clear, with well-chosen
vocabulary that enriches teaching and communicates thoughtfully, responsively, and effectively
for a wide range of student understanding and encourages appropriate student language
development. This artifact best aligns with this KSD because I showed correct written works in
the summary, I was expressive and clear with my information presented in the power point, and I
presented a wide vocabulary in the summary and the power point. I used effective student
understanding by quizzing the class at the end of the presentation to ensure the students retained
the information presented.
Additional Alignments
KSD1.a. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY The candidate displays
extensive content knowledge of his/her subject areas and demonstrates a continuing search of new
content knowledge, resources, and best instructional practices, while understanding client diversity and
client misconceptions and misunderstandings as a key to the instruction process.
KSD2.d. MANAGES CLIENT/WORK PROROCALS The candidate can establish clear standards of
conduct with client input. The candidate can respond to misbehavior effectively, being sensitive to
individual needs.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
What I Learned about training from this experience.
I learned from this experience that information must be presented in a wide range of areas. The
information must also be presented clearly and professionally, using many different forms of
communication. I have learned that improvement in presenting my information more fluently
and smoothly is needed. The transitions while switching subject matters could be improved by
adding different lines into the presentation. I also need to use stronger non-verbal communication
by having proper eye contact with the students and facing the students. I also learned that the
information is better perceived by the students if it can be related to them in some form.

What I learned about myself as a prospective health promotion specialist as a result of this
experience/work sample:

I will use the information I have learned to better help my clients. I will show enthusiasm for the
material I am presenting to my clients to fully obtain their attention. The clients will learn more
effectively if I present the material as an interactive and knowledgeable experience. I will also
show my knowledge of the subject being presented and be prepared for any questions or
comments that are presented by the clients. The innovations and growth of health promotion over
the past 50-100 years have been very influential to how our profession has developed. It is a
great feeling knowing that our profession is so beneficial and a growing respected field of study.
