rash of email messages be­
ing sent falsely under the
name of the Census Bureau,
the Better Business Bureau
(Bm!) Serving Mississippi
offers the following factoids
about the 2010 census:
The U.S. Census
Bureau will not send email
messages to obtain or veritY
information or to solicit do­
nations
Census workers
will not begin going door­
to-door until April. The cam­
paign will end in July.
Field representa­
tives will never ask for your
Social Security number,
bank account information,
or credit card numbers.
The information re­
quests will be in the form
of 10 simple questions re­
lating to name, gender, age,
race, ethnicity and home
ownership. Your answers
are protected by law and not
shared with anyone outside
of the Census Bureau:

Citizens are re­

quired by law to respond to
the census information re­
quests. The data collected
is used in allocation of fed­
eral funds and in determin­
ing each state's Congres­
sional representation.
"If someone con­
tacts you claiming to be
working for the Census Bu­
reau before April, they arc
probably trying to obtain
your personal information il­
legally," said Bill Moak,
President/CEO of the Mis­
sissippi BBB. "Remember,
too, that all valid door-to­
door census workers will
have proper identification, a
handheld device for gather­
ing information and a con­
fidentiality notice."
