Philosophy of Nursing

Kaitlin S. Allen
My understanding of the role and responsibilities of a nursing professional has
developed immensely throughout my nursing school experience. As a young nurse, I have
been highly influenced by instructors, who have guided me and helped to shape my
practice. In addition, I have explored the manner in which my personal values articulate
with the values of the nursing profession. Through this exploration, I developed my
personal philosophy of nursing that will guide my nursing practice. My philosophy of
nursing incorporates my commitment to public service, knowledge of medicine, and
respect for human dignity. Furthermore, my philosophy is centered on compassion,
altruism and advocacy.
I believe that the nature of nursing is rooted in compassion and an undeniable
desire to care for those in need. I believe that the profession of nursing should be
practiced with kindness and unwavering respect for the dignity of every patient. My
philosophy focuses on the importance of the nurses role as a patient advocate, and
dedication to providing patient-centered care. I believe that nurses must strive to establish
and foster an environment that promotes patients physical, mental, and emotional well
being.
Nursing has consistently been identified as the most trusted profession; this is
both an immense honor, and an immense responsibility. Nursing should be practiced with
the utmost veracity and respect for confidentiality. I believe that nursing practice should
be driven by a strong commitment to the professional and ethical delivery of care.

Furthermore, nurses must exercise individual accountability in upholding the standards of

care within the scope of nursing practice.
I believe that nurses are innovators, and function within a framework that is
continually evolving. Nurses must strive for constant improvement in the quality of the
care they deliver by expanding their knowledge base through continued education. In
addition, nurses must collaborate effectively as a member of the healthcare team and to
ensure the provision of competent health care.
As a soon-to-be graduate of the University of Arizona College of Nursing, I will
lead my nursing practice with grace, and perform nursing skills that reflect evidencebased practice. I will value my own physical, mental and emotional well being so that I
can provide the best possible care for my patients. I will direct my practice with
compassion, competence and integrity. Furthermore, I will strive towards continuous
personal and professional growth and development.
