HispanicsandtheEducationalAttainment
Heresafactthatmaynotsurpriseyou:thechildrenoftherichperformbetterinschool,on
average,thanchildrenfrommiddleclassorpoorfamilies.Studentsgrowingupinricherfamilies
havebettergradesandhigherstandardizedtestscores,onaverage,thanpoorerstudentshigher
graduationratesandhigherratesofcollegeenrollmentandcompletion.(TheNewYorkTimes)

WithLosAngeleshavingahighpopulationofHispanicswehavetostartofwiththe
factsstartingoffwiththedifferencebetweenthislocationandothersthatmakeseducation
amongstdifferentracialgroupsextremelydifferent.InLosAngelesjust45%ofthestudentsin
theLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrictcompletedallfouryearsofhighschoolsuccessfully,
comparedwiththenationalgraduationaverageof70%becauseresearchillustratesthatstudents
inurbanpublicschoolsarelesslikelytograduatehighschoolthanthosestudentsenrolledin
suburbanlocations.(LATIMES)
Theeducationalattainmentisapowerfulpredictorthathelped
determinethatstatisticofthosewhograduatedhighschoolintheLAUSD,butitalsodetermines
thestudentswellbeing,ithelpsestablishthestudentseconomicsuccess,predicts
unemployment,measurestheindividualsfuturehealth,andsocioeconomicwellbeing,and
finallyhelpsdetectthelikelihoodofthosestudentsgettingadivorceorgettingincarcerated.
Whenitcomestotheratesofhighereducationalattainmentthegapsbetweenthelowestrace
hispanicshastochangenoworelsemorechildrenwillcontinuetogetaffectedastheyearsgo
by.
PROBLEM+ HARM IT IS CAUSING

Fromthe1980suntilpresenttimestheemployedpopulationinCaliforniaof18to34
yearoldshasdecreasedfromaround71percentinthe1980sto60%in2013.Theresultofthis
declinehastodowiththeemploymentofouryouth,primarilybecausemorehispanicsarefalling
intotheeducationalattainmentgapanddonotexceedtheireducationafterhighschool.The
educationalattainmentinCaliforniaparticularlyhighschoolcompletionvariessignificantly
byrace/ethnicity.In2012,37.3%ofLatinoshadnotcompletedhighschool,comparedto9.7%
ofAfricanAmericans,9.1%ofAsians,and4.6%ofwhites.Thisgapistroublinggiventhat
Latinosrepresentabout35%ofCaliforniasworkingagepopulation.(PublicPolicyInstituteof
California)

Onewouldimagineurbanschoolswhoaredoingworseacademicallywouldhavesome
sortoffundamentalsupportforacademicandnonacademicprograms.Yet,urbanschools
typicallyspendremarkablylessmoneyperpupilthanschooldistrictswithlowerpovertyrates,
evenwhenoneaccountsforfederalgrantmoneygiventoschoolswithlargepercentagesofpoor
students.(LevelingLocalismandRacialInequality)Asstated,Theseschoolsaremorelikelyto
haveteacherswhoarenotcredentialedinthesubjectareasinwhichtheyteach,offerfewer
honorsandadvancedplacementcourses,andhavehighteacherturnoverrates.(LLRI)

Inhence,studentswhoattendsuchschoolsreportedscoringloweronstandardized
achievementtestsandarethereforemorelikelytodropout.Butinrealitycanweblamethem
whentheoddsofstrivingacademicallyisnotintheirfavor?
