Overland Park Detectives warn of IRS Scam
The Overland Park Police Department would like the public to be aware of an Internal Revenue
Service (IRS) telephone scam. Detectives have seen an increased number of reports where victims
are receiving phone calls from out of state phone numbers or 1-800 numbers (sometimes
masked as 911). The caller is advising the victim they are behind on their taxes and owe the IRS
money. The caller tells the victim they must pay the full amount owed or they will be arrested,
sued, or assets seized (car, home, etc).
The callers sometimes provide their IRS badge number or cite an IRS code. The Overland Park
Police Department has received reports of victims wiring money to the callers.
If the public receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS please call the IRS
at 1-800-829-1040 or you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online.
