Motivating students is one of the most important jobs in a child's education. Finding out what motivates students is as important as knowing the content. Implementing tools and strategies that will help get to the bottom of what makes them tick.

As teachers, one of our most important jobs in a childs education is to
fuel their intrinsic motivation. There are times where it seems impossible, where students just dont seem to have any trace of intrinsic motivation, but there are always ways to dig it out of them. The first step in finding that intrinsic motivation is getting to know the student personally. Getting to your students has many benefits, but I think this is the most important one. When we find out what motivates our students, there is nothing in our way to stop us from teaching them to our fullest potential. Knowing our students is as important as knowing the content we teach, because no student is the same. The way I will achieve this goal is by implementing tools and strategies that will help get to the bottom of what makes my students tick. The first strategy I will use is finding out my students personal interests and hobbies. This can be done during morning meetings or breaks and by finding out the personal interests and hobbies of my students; I can find ways to structure my lessons so that the students will enjoy them. The next tool I will use is SMART goals. At the beginning of the year, I will have students complete two SMART goals; an academic goal and a personal goal. They will be monitoring their goals over the course of the year and will hopefully stay invested in them. This will tell me what motivates them and it will exercise their intrinsic motivation. Another strategy I will use is praise and support. After finding out what motivates my students, I will monitor their progress and give them genuine support and encouragement. This will make the students feel important and theyll want to keep working towards their goals because they know they have support. One last strategy I will use to motivate my students is by not giving them prizes. By giving students prizes for doing well on a test or behaving well all day, students will begin to develop extrinsic motivation. They will only want to do well in school so that they will get a piece of candy or a toy. You should reward students with small praises or a good grade so that they will understand that achieving something should come from within and not because you want a prize. Motivating students can be a tough gig sometimes, but if you get to know them and understand what makes them tick, you will find a way to increase their intrinsic motivation. I think teachers should always encourage students and support them towards a goal. We should also share some personal experiences with goals and what made us keep working towards
that goal. Students will learn how to intrinsically motivate themselves as long as they have the support from their theachers.
