MEMO

To: Students and Instructor of RWS 1301

From: Alondra Gomez
Subject: Discourse community Memo
Date: September 10th, 2015
Dear RWS 1301 peers, Im here to inform all of you about an organization in our campus that
has been around for a couple of years now; 19 to be exact. This young agency/ organization
known as The Center of Civic Engagement was built to give UTEP students the opportunity to
involve themselves in community based teachings and learning initiatives.
As a student takes on the responsibility of informing our El Paso - Juarez community about the
different educational events meant to provide services and resources about typical challenges one
faces today and its resolutions, opportunities for students interested in community based
teachings will emerge, as many organizations turn to UTEP when seeking for young and excited
volunteers. To become a volunteer one must be a UTEP student and register to be a part of Miner
Volunteer Corps . With this ,established partnerships with various organizations will give you the
opportunity to pick and choose between a variety of different volunteer hungry events. Many
of these events are funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, the City of El Pasos Parks
and Recreation Departments, Diocesan and Migrant Refugee Services, and many more which are
focused on informing citizens of the different organizations that are able to assist their needs.
The Center of Civic Engagement acts to provide services and resources to the community,
faculty, and students. Its partnership with organizations funded by the agencies listed above are
extremely useful to identify and solve community problems. Diocesan and Migrant Refugee
Services (whom the Center of Civic Engagement is partners with) was able to provide English as
a Second Language (ESL) programming, as well as mentors and tutors to adults in the El Paso
area in order for them to pass their Citizenship exam. Some of the most recent collaborations are
with the agency Boys and Girls club of El Paso where UTEP students have the opportunity to
interact with children during after-school hours to develop positive self-image, realization of
self-worth, and opportunities to reach ones maximum potential. At the moment Boys and Girls
club of El Paso is requesting for tutors, coaches, and volunteers that are willing to help the
Montana Vista Elementary site organize, clean, and re-arrange different facilities in its complex.
Those interested in becoming a Coach will be able to create a sports teams of their choice with
youth members to participate in city leagues. This agency helps eliminate the problem of lowself esteem many young children and teenagers have to deal with by engaging in honest
conversations and promoting self acceptance and love.
The community of Miner Volunteer Corps understands that once they accept to become a
member they have to be ready and willing to attend events which sometimes arent mentioned
until the day of. Being part of this community requires dedication, love, and patience when
dealing with many different communities across town that all have their own problems where a
little more assistance is necessary. Members know how to identify different agencies and events
and they understand the many volunteer groups and their unique way of informing others.
Overall, the Center of Civic Engagement is meant to assist the community of El Paso - Juarez.
This agency in our very own campus gives us an advantage to gain work worthy skills and

experience that will surely help us understand the needs of our neighbors; and lets not forget that
the Center of Civic Engagement is here to encourage others to make a difference. Your help is
always needed.
Sincerely,
Alondra Gomez
