UNDERSTAND
Enhancing and decorating are two different things that you do to a product
Beauty, appeal and the appearance of a product often attract customers into buying products.
Products that are unique and attractive often make them noticeable and saleable to buyers.
Finished wood, metal and bamboo products are already appealing by the way they
were made. However, enhancing the uniqueness of the product will make it more appealing and
attractive in the eyes of buyers. Decorating the products increase their attractiveness. These products
are to be marketed as an alternative source of income.
Enhancing and decorating are two different things that you do to a product
Enhancing means making the total appearance of the product attractive, the parts are well-
polished and no defects will be observed. Enhancing makes the product more interesting and
functional to the user. It involves printing, designing, painting and coloration of the wood, bamboo, or
metal finished products to increase their beauty and appeal to the target buyers.
Decorating means making a finished product look more attractive by adding extra
items or images to it.
SAQ-2: How can I make bamboo, wood and metal products appealing and saleable?
It is important to enhance or decorate finished wood, metal, and bamboo products because:
1. Finished products tend to be more attractive and saleable to customers when enhanced and
SAQ decorated. They entice customers to take notice, attract interest and buy the products.
2. Enhancing and decorating help improve the quality as well as maintain the durability of the
finished product.
3. Finished products that are enhanced or decorated beautify the product itself 4. It can
increase sale
5. Enhanced or decorated products can bring more profit.
Engaging in wood, metal, and bamboo business is a job that anybody could undertake. The
following are examples of creative and innovative ideas done on these products:
1. Wood can be made into kitchen utensils, key chains, wall decors, centrepieces, card tags,
and other unique furniture. Plant racks can also be made into wood. Wood can also be made
into unique-shaped picture frames.
2. Today, metal products are more simple and streamlined for easier maintenance and they
are more efficient. Metals are created into cake racks, flowers, candle holders and wine
holders. Metal chairs are creatively and beautifully made.
3. Bamboo products are considered to be the leader among environment-friendly products.
Bamboos are made into smooth and sleek fountains or vases. Some are being used as cups
and serving ware. Bamboos are made into soft clothing and other good-looking gadgets.
The following are some common materials used in enhancing and/or decorating finished products:
1. Varnish - a clear transparent hard protective finish or film often used on bamboo and wood
products for glossy and clean finish.
2. Permanent markers - also referred to as pentel pens are used for writing on metals, plastics,
ceramics, wood, stone, cardboard etc.
3. Ink - a liquid or paste that contain pigments or dyes and is used to colour a surface to
produce an image, text, or design. Ink is used for drawing or writing creative designs on a
finished product.
4. Paint -a coloured substance spread over a surface and dries to leave a thin decorative or
protective coating. Paints are used for colourful and attractive surface colouring of finished
products.
5. Lighter - a device that produces a small flame used to mark design ideas in wood and
bamboo materials
Creativity, innovativeness and resourcefulness are needed in enhancing and decorating.

of an artistic work.
⚫ Innovativeness refers to the process of featuring new and original ideas in the design of a
finished product.
⚫ Resourcefulness refers to having the ability to find quick and clever ways to improve a
particular product.
