Game Commentary
Submitted by Doug Klein: Pine Creek opened up the league portion of the 2010 campaign [Colorado Springs (5A) Metro League] with a 6-2
road victory over previously unbeaten Coronado. The Eagles were led by senior forward, Carolyn Simon, who recorded a hat trick with a lot of
help from an attack characterized by possession and crisp passing. Sophomore midfielder, Annie Wooldridge, recorded her first goal of the season
to go along with two assists while classmate Jenna Howerton added a tally and an assist.
Senior midfielder, Kelsie Schmitz (1G, 1A) opened the Pine Creek scoring in the 6th minute when junior, Shannon Kelly, collected her own corner
kick after a clear and sent it back into the box where Schmitz one-timed it past Cougar goalkeeper, Hannah Smith (6 GA, 9 SV, 80 Min). Simon
got her first score of the night just a half minute later on a give and go play with Wooldridge. The Eagles closed out the first half scoring in the
13th minute when Wooldridge won the ball on a challenge, eluded defenders along the 18 and slid the ball into the far post.
The visitors were up 5-0 when the potent Coronado offense finally struck in the 72nd minute when a direct kick off the foot of junior Kaeli
Vandersluis found freshman Tiana Cerciello who put the ball past Pine Creek netminder, Carmen McDermott (2GA, 4 SV, 80 Min). With the
shutout gone the game opened up in the final 8 minutes as the teams went end-to-end and traded goals. Simon completed her hat trick when
Howerton found her alone in front of the goal after a nice give and go with junior defender, Kim Kogler, who was also creditied with an assist.
Cougar forward, Shannon Young, rounded out the evening's scoring on a a 16 yard blast to the corner over McDermott.
The Eagles are right back in action Thursday night when they travel to Don Breese Stadium for a showdown with the Colorado Springs (4A) Metro
League leading rival Rangers of Lewis-Palmer in an interleague battle between playoff hopefuls. Kickoff is at 6 pm.
