Hawthornes
Literary Era
The Romantic Period
Defining characteristics: a return to and appreciation of
the natural world, belief in goodness of humanity,
consideration of the artist as a creator, focus on emotion
over reason
Hawthornes contemporaries: Emerson, Thoreau,
Melville, Stowe, Poe, Whitman

Romance vs. Novel

Hawthorne was purposeful
about naming this book a
Romance
Set in the remote past (200
years previous) and less
concerned with realism,
more with human
emotional response and
what might happen
For ambiguous moments,
the author lets the reader
decide what happened

Historical Context:
Puritan New England
Massachusetts Bay colony, migrated from England early
1600s
Believed in a pure (read: fundamentalist) interpretation of
the bible
Government and religion tightly bound together
Had strict rules about dress, entertainment, etc. NOT
tolerant of anything scandalous or sensual
Did not seek universal religious freedom, only sought their
own religious freedom. Would banish or persecute people
who did not follow their beliefs and regulations

Sin in Puritanism:
Dont Do It
Sin was intolerable and would invoke Gods wrath in
very literal ways: disaster, illness, etc. were signs of
Gods disapproval
Puritans actively looked for any instance of sin in the
community, so that it could be brought to light and
scourged.
