mirror above it, a silver Roman lamp, and two old Greek bronze figures
representing the heads of Agrippina and Alexander are decorating its
marble top. The floor is of Venetian mosaic, there are no rugs. The
parlor is exhaling an atmosphp*e of cold wealth and order. Its middle
doors are closed while those on the right and left are open but concealed by dark-red silk curtains. The warm May sunshine entering
through the window is slowly creeping up from the floor on the little
