Parts of a Story

Lesson Plan for 5th-6th grade students (Language Arts)

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


The students will show their understanding of a story by completing a plot diagram with visuals and
written explanations. They will complete this activity using Storyboard That, a website that allows people
to recreate stories in a fun and effective way.

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will show and describe how a particular storys or dramas plot unfolds in a series of
episodes and how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.
2. Students will collaborate with peers and present their storyboards together.

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Ipad
2. storyboardthat.com
3. book

ACTIVITY
Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson
1. The students will have read a chapter book
2. In pairs, students will complete a rough draft of their graphic organizer. This will include:

Exposition
Conflict
Rising action
Climax
Falling action

Resolution
3. After their rough draft is complete the students will use iPads to access storyboardthat.com.
4. The teacher will teach students how to operate the website and let students explore the tools.

5. After the students have become familiar with the Storyboard functions they can begin the creation
of their plot diagram.
6. Instruct students that they can be creative but should still keep the integrity of the story by using
accurate dialogue and character traits.
7. When the storyboards are complete the students will present it to the class.
