BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Although there are other activities that can explain various landforms around the world. This activity will capture and
engage the students in a comical way. I recommend that students first learn to correctly match the definitions to the correct
landform names with the help of visuals such as pictures of each landform.
A landform is a natural feature of the solid surface of the Earth or other planetary body. Landforms together make up a
given terrain, and their arrangement in the landscape is known as topography.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: (25 minutes). Inform your students of the day's main lesson content: different, or natural features
around the world, such as mountains, valleys, hill, rivers and lakes. In this multi-day lesson plan, students will
use the Landform SMART BOARD interactive activity. This activity is a resource to demonstrate and
identify the different types of landforms.

Have students partner up and list as many landforms as they can from the Interactive activity. As they discuss,
record the names of any landforms you hear on the board.

Procedures:
Teacher Procedures

1. Day One (30minutes) Ask students, What are landforms? Allow a few students to answer.
2. Have students watch the landform interactive video/activity on the SMART BOARD. As a class give
students a verbal quiz on landforms from the video on the smartboard. This will help you measure your
students understanding of the topic.
3. On the smartboard write Landforms. Then ask students to list some things they have learned about
Landforms today. Record their responses on the board.
4. Hand out the land form work sheet. Allow students to work together in their groups to complete the
worksheet on landforms. After completion of the work sheet review the work sheet with students for
understanding of various landforms.
Student Procedures
1. Students will give suggested answers to the question What are landform?
2. Students will watch the video and complete the interactive learning activity.
3. Students will verbally tell the teacher what they have learned from the video/ interactive activity
4. Students will work among their groups to complete the landform worksheet.
Teacher Procedures
5. Day Two (50 min) Review with students by asking them what facts they can remember about
landforms. Allow students to respond.
6. Now ask the students, What are landforms? Explain to the class, with your help using the internet each
group you will create a comic strip on ToonDoo.com Students will create a comic strip explaining
various types of landforms around the world. Show the example already created to the class. Inform the
class this is what the finished project should look like.
7. First write down each landform discussed on a small sheet of paper separately. Put them in a cup, jar,
hat, etc. Place the class in 4 or 5 groups (depending on class size). Assign a captain for each group. Walk
around to each group and have the captain pull one of the landforms discussed from the hat, jar, cup etc.
8. Next have the captain of each group assign each person in the group to the following (presenter,
decision maker and designer).

9. Starting with group 1 have the decision maker and designer come to the computer to begin creating their
comic strip on ToonDoo with your help and guidance and print them out. (repeat this step until every
group has created their comic strip.
10. In the meantime, have the other groups discuss among the group members what they would like their
comic strip to look like
11. Once all groups have completed and printed out their comic strips, staring with group 4 or 5 (depending
on classroom size have the presenters from each group come to the front of the class and present their
comic strip. The presenter from each group will first tell the class what landform they choose and then
they will read their comic strip to the class.
12. After demonstrating with the class, have the students go around the room and share their Comic strip
with other students, this is to see how each group explained the different types of landforms.
13. At the end of the day, ask students questions on the different types of landforms, ask them to give you a
review on what they have learn. Ask the students to tell you how are the where are the landforms mostly
found, or created.
Student Procedures
5. Students will respond to teacher verbally by stating facts learned from the previous day about land
forms.
8. Students will be placed in groups. Among the groups a captain will be chosen and they will pick and
assign duties for the other members such as, decision maker, presenter and designer.

Closure

The teacher will review characteristics and facts about the different landforms of the world and will ask
students do they have questions regarding the different types of landforms

The teacher will display each students comic strip outside of the classroom to show the various types of
landforms.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

To assess the class understanding of different landforms, have them complete the Landform worksheet
without using any notes.
The teacher will continually walk around and assist each student with the activity.
The teacher will be checking for understanding and making sure that each student is on track during the
activity.
The teacher will informally assess each student as she walks around and a formative assessment will be
noted upon the completion of the activity.
Each student will be given a check plus for completing the activity to the best of their ability, a check for
work that is complete, but not to the best of their ability, and a check minus for work that is below their
working ability.
After finishing the lesson, students will be able to identify and describe various landforms with 100
percent accuracy

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
