Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Katlyn Bundy Date: December 4, 2017

Grade and Topic: First Grade- Science Length of Lesson: 65 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Cornelius School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

How does natural selection explain how organisms have changed over time?

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a list of habitats, the students will identify a plants and animals in a habitat and create a
graphic organizer to present with 100% accuracy.
Each student in the group should actively participate in research and complete the
worksheet. When presenting, the presenters should take turns talking. The other students
should fill in the blanks on their worksheet to show they paid attention. After presenting
every habitat, the students will draw their favorite habitat and write 2-3 sentences
explaining why its their favorite.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN State Science Standard- Biodiversity and Change: Investigate how plants and animals can
be grouped according to their habitats. GLE 0107.5.1
ISTE 3: Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital
tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts, and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others.
3a. Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and
other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.
ISTE 6: Creative Communicator- Students communicate clearly and express themselves
creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media
appropriate to their goals.
6d. Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their
intended audiences.

Technology will be used to research the habitats- what is it, where it is located, some
animals, and some plants. Then students will use Kidspiration to form a graphic organizer
of the information found on the website.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

By the end of the lesson, students will have mastered different habitats and the plants and
animals that live in them.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson will build on a previous lesson that has explained different habitats and how animals
from one habitat cannot live in a different habitat without adapting. Students will also have
already had practice and an explanation on using Kidspiration.
This lesson will lead into a lesson on extinction and why it happens.
I am aware that the lesson ill be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and
for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are
not a part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: (5 minutes)
To start class, I will play the YouTube video titled The Habitat Song. I will encourage
the students to sing along with the video
Last class we learned about habitats. Can anyone name a habitat and some animals or
plants that live there? (Allow time for students to answer)
Today, you are going to be put into groups. Your group will be assigned a specific
habitat, and all of you will research the habitat and create a graphic organizer to present.
This is hopefully help anyone who is still struggling, and it will be a good review for our
test that is coming up in a few days.
Procedures:
RESEARCH ACTIVITY (20 minutes)
Prior to the computer
1. After the song, I will number students off into the 7 groups for the 7 habitats.
2. I will assign a habitat to each group, giving the students in the group the fill-in
worksheet necessary to complete the project.
3. I will instruct the students to only bring the pencil and worksheet to the computer lab,
and then line up quietly with their partner.
At the computer
1. 1 will assign students to the computer and instruct them to put their hands in their laps.
a. If there are not enough computers, I will have group members share a
computer to do the research.
2. I will instruct each group to the class website, which will be bookmarked, and then I
will have them click the link appropriate for their habitat.
3. Once on the appropriate page for the habitat, each student will read the worksheet-
with help from the teacher, if needed- and fill in the blanks.
4. As groups finish, they will proceed to the next part of the project.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZER CREATION (20 minutes)

At the computer
1. Once finished researching and completing the worksheet, the group will raise their
hands for me to show them how to get to Kidspiration.
a. I will also give them a small paper with directions on how to proceed.
2. Once on Kidspiration, the group will follow the directions at the bottom of the
worksheet.
a. Create a graphic organizer using this information. Each blank you had
to fill MUST go on the graphic organizer. Give a full sentence when
explaining what the habitat is
Include: A title, at least one picture for each category, and 3 color
changes for the bubbles.
3. The group will form the graphic organizer following the instructions given above.
4. Once finished, the group will then raise their hands for me to show them what to do
next.
a. I will have the students save the project and I will put it on a flash drive.
b. If the group is finished sooner than others, the students will be instructed to
click the bookmark for the PBS kids habitat explorer. They will use their
headphones to go through the activities.
After the computer
1. I will instruct the students to stand up, push their chairs in, grab their belongings, and
line up to go back to the classroom.
2. Once in the classroom, I will have the students put their worksheets in the
assignments bucket, sit down in their chairs, and take out one piece of paper.
PRESENTING (15 MINUTES)
1. Each group will present their habitat to the classroom.
2. I will instruct the students to clearly state the parts of their organizer, and the students
who are not presenting will be required to give their full attention to the presenting
group.
Closure: (5 Minutes)
After all the groups have presented, I will instruct the students to take out one sheet of
paper.
I will have them draw their favorite habitat and write 2-3 sentences why it is their favorite.
When they are done, they will quietly and calmly put it in the assignments bucket.
