ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Space- The area between objects in a room.


Positive- Space that is used.
Negative- Space that is not used.

Line- Two points that are connected. They give a sense of direction and
space.
Types – Vertical- gives a sense of power and gives the room height making it seem
more masculine and powerful.
- Horizontal- Horizontal lines make the room seem more peaceful and
calmer, best option for a study room.

- Diagonal- Diagonal eyes keep your eyes moving, and it creates an active
atmosphere.

- Curved- Curved Lines soften the overall look of the room.

Shape/Form

Is the shape created form a piece of furniture.

Texture- The way an object feels and looks.


Formal- consisted with smooth textures
Informal- Rough, more industrial textures.

Colour- The colour influences the mood and the feeling of the room.
This element is very significant because the colour of the room can
completely change the design and the atmosphere of the room.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Proportion-
Golden Mean- A rule that keeps the room ‘balanced’, keeping everything equal in
both parts.
Scale
Ratios- Keeping the furniture and design equal and proportioned.

Balance
Formal- Both sides are same and equal.
Informal – The side are imbalanced.

Rhythm- The feeling of movement in the room:


Repetition – Where is tool is repeated over and over again within the room.
Transition- Transition is when one part of the design in a room suddenly
changes/transitions to another design.
Radiation- When your eyes move out from the central point.
Gradation- Moves your eyes from an object that is large to an object that is small , it
could also be from light or dark or vice versa.

Emphasis- The ‘focal’ point of the room, the area where your eyes
focus to.

Harmony- A variation and unity of designs in the room.


Unity- When the room has all the same designs and not much of a variation.
Variety- When there are a variety of colours, lines, texture and shapes.

ACTIVITY
Find a picture of a living room and analyse it according to the elements and principles of interior design.
Place your picture in the centre of a slide, and position your comments all around it.

Colour- Different shades of white and wood look at the focal point which is the
colours, create a modern yet friendly mood. small table, then their view would Proportion – The room is proportion we
spread out to look at the res tof put a line in the middle everything splits
the room.
