Grade and Topic: 3rd grade Social Studies/Geography Length of Lesson:60 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Dr. Cornelius School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● There are seven continents in the world.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given a list of the seven continents, students will label and identify the seven continents, with 80%
accuracy.
● Students are expected to have full attention and participation throughout instruction. When creating the
comic and playing the interactive game, students must try their best.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
 Geography .12 Identify and locate the four hemispheres (i.e., Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western), equator,
prime meridian, North and South Poles, and the seven continents.

MATERIALS:
● Promethean board
● Computer/laptop
● Pencil
● Blank world map worksheet

 Internet access will be needed to research an assigned continent. Students will also need internet access
to create a comic.
o Website to help look up information:
o ToonDoo:
o Interactive activity website:

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● What are the key concepts for the lesson?
● After this lesson, students should know how to locate and identify the seven continents.
● Academic language not addressed.
● How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
● The previous lesson focused on the four hemispheres, equator, and prime meridian.
● How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?
● Next, students will focus on North America and its surrounding boarders.
● Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments?
● For higher leveled students I will have bonus questions and/or a tell me more section on their
activities. For the lowered student, those with IEPs, I will give them more time and help them with the
comic. For ESL students, will have words in their native language on their papers.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction:
I will begin class by presenting the continent rap. “There’s Asia, Africa, and Australia. Boom boom
chick. Europe, North and South America. Boom boom chick, and last but not least Antarctica. Now,
word.” “Now can any one tell me what I just named?”
● Procedures:
Prior to the computer
1. Once the rap has been presented, I will get out a world map and show the students where each continent is
located. We will have a class discussion on the seven continents. Students will then be grouped into six teams and
will be asked to get their laptops out and get on the interactive game website. (10 minutes)
At Computer
2. Students will go to https://online.seterra.com/en/vgp/3004 and will be asked to for one person to represent their
group on the computer. When the timer has started, students will be asked to see who can finish labeling the map
the fastest and with the best percentage. Students will take turns labeling the map. (7 minutes)
After computer
3. Students will report their test times and scores to the teacher to take for a formative assessment. Students will
receive the instructions for the next assignment. (3 minutes)
Prior to computer
4.Teacher will go over the instruction for the next assignment. I will present the comic I have completed as an
example for the students. Students will ask questions, if any. (7 minutes)
At computer
5. Students will go to http://www.toondoo.com/ and create a comic about their assigned continent. Students can
be very creative and use any form of comic that they would like to use. They can make an event that happened at
their continent or give details about their location. (20 minutes)
After computer:
6. Students will present their comics to the class and will give three interesting facts about their continent that
they researched. (10 minutes)
7. Students will be handed a blank, world map and will be asked to label the seven continents. This will be used as
a summative assessment. (5 minutes)
● Closure:
● After presentations, students will be asked to write what their favorite continent is and why in 2
or 3 sentences. The students will hand this into the teacher on their way out.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● The formative assessments are the interactive activity and the exit ticket.
● The interactive activity, exit ticket, and comic are all related to the objective, because they are all
working towards finding and labeling the seven continents.

MODIFICATIONS:
● For the students who are below median, I will allow them more, if needed. These students can draw their
comic, instead of creating one on a computer.
● For the students who are above median, I will ask them to write more than three sentences on the exit
ticket. These students may be asked to create a more detailed comic.
