2. Many Middle West states are formed from the Louisiana Purchase.

12. Detroit began as Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit. The citys name
comes from the French word Detroit meaning strait.
13. Missouri is characterized by arguing because people disagreed
over the slavery issue and over whether Missouri should be a free
state or a slave state.

14. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 made it a slave state and this is
how Missouri became part of the United States.
15. Maine was also involved in the Missouri Compromise.
16. The Dred Scott Supreme Court Case was another event in
Missouri that involved the issue of slavery.
17. Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in a free stated and sought
freedom.
18. A nickname of Kansas is Bleeding Kansas.
19. Kansas has this name because there were many battles over the
issue of slavery. People died as a result of these conflicts.
20. John Brown was an abolitionist who led a raid on a settlement at
Pottawatomie Creek.
21. An abolitionist is a person who is against slavery.
22. A natural resource that can be found in Kansas is gold. General
Custers soldiers found the gold in the Black Hills.
23. The Red Stockings got their start in Cincinnati, Ohio.
24. William Mayo and his sons established St. Marys Hospital, which
later became known as the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic is one of
the worlds foremost centers of medical research.
25. The main products of the Nebraska farmlands are corn, wheat,
and cattle.
26. Beautiful rock formations are found in the badlands region of the
state.
