What is a verb?
A verb is word used to express an action, a
condition, or a state of being
The three major kinds of verbs are:
action
helping
linking

What is an action verb?


An action verb is a word that shows physycal
or mental action.
Ex:

The fish swims in the water.


I believe that school uniforms are a
good idea.

What are action verbs?


Action verbs can be either
Transitive
or
Intransitive

What is a transitive verb?


Transitive verbs can take a direct object (d.o)
Direct objects answer the question what?
to the verb.
Ex: Susan wrote a novel.

What is an intransitive verb?


Intransitive verbs are those that can never
take a direct object. It makes no sense to
ask what? to those verbs.
Ex: I arrived late last night.

What is a helping verb?


Helping verbs help the main verb express
action or show time. The helping verb and
the main verb together create a Verb Phrase.
Ex: Helen has run in many marathons.

The most common helping verbs are: to be, to
do, and

What is a linking verb?

Linking verbs link the subject with an adjective,


noun, or pronoun in the predicate of the sentence.
Ex: The winners of the game were excited.
