Lesson Plan # 4

Repertoire: Mussorgsky Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks
Other Teaching Materials: Picture of a chicken, picture of an egg,
New Vocabulary: Chicken, egg, hatch
Lesson Objectives:
Students will
Identify and understand that chickens hatch from eggs
Express a story of an unhatched chick through movement to this piece
Demonstrate understanding of form by identifying the A and B parts of the piece
Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Everyone please sit criss cross applesauce on the floor near piano land. (You stand
in the back of the room the students are facing a different direction than past
lessons).
2. Who recognizes this animal? Can I have a volunteer to tell me what kind it is?
3. What is this a picture of? How are chickens and eggs related?
4. Were going to all pretend were chickens inside of an egg this morning!
5. Everyone stand up in the same place youre sitting and spread out.
6. Pretend you have an egg in your hands.
7. Make it grow bigger and bigger until its finally bigger than you are.
8. Step into your egg and freeze.
9. Now that were all baby chicks inside of eggs that are about to hatch by
pretending to poke the sides of your egg.
10. Now.freeze!
11. Poke again!
12. Lets pretend that were rolling around in the egg. Well tiptoe around the room
while pushing the egg with our hands.
13. Lets poke again, and then finally the egg hatches.
Present
14. Were going to use these movements to act out this story while listening to the
music now.
15. Freeze on the big chord at the end of each section. (Demonstrate this to students).
16. Repeat for the second A section.
17. You start rolling around inside your egg! During the B section, demonstrate tiptoe
walking around the room while pushing the egg with your hand.
18. When the A section returns, start poking again.

19. On the final chord, everyone will break out of the egg!
Practice & Extend
20. Everyone please quietly sit down.
21. Everyone quietly turn your heads towards the board to look at the listening map.
22. What movement did we do first? (Poking the egg) This is the first line of the map
on the board.
23. Play through that section of the recording.
24. After we froze, we poked the eggs again! Notice the second line is repeated.
25. Play through that on the recording.
26. Does anyone remember what came next? (Rolling around in the egg)
27. This is the third line of the map.
28. What is next? The cracked eggs again, finish the recording.
Assess & Close
29. Notice that each cracked egg line is labeled A and the moving eggs are labeled
B.
30. I am going to play a few excerpts of the piece and I want you to raise one hand if
you think it is line A and both hands if you think it is line B.
31. Play beginning (A), 0:32 (B), 0:50 (B), and 0:56 (A)
32. Thank you all for your attention today!
