Instructional Procedure
Prepare (is this section engaging enough, or should I come up with another
idea?)
Welcome first and second graders! Lets all sit cross legged on the
floor.
Has anyone read the book, Hickory Dickory Dock?
(Listen for responses)
My favorite books are the ones that have a chant that is written
about the same idea the book has.
In the book, the mouse runs up the clock, and when the clock
struck one, the mouse ran down.

Today we will be chanting the poem, Hickory Dickory Dock!

Present

Lets all stand up.

I want you to use your best listening ears and remain as quiet as
you can, and if it helps to place a finger over your lips, you can
do that now. I will chant the whole song. Listen carefully.
(Chant the entire song in a tempo slow enough to feel micro beats in triple
meter.)
Now, I will chant the poem again, watch and listen carefully.
This time I want you to do what I did. Sway from side to side,
making sure to transfer your weight between your feet. This is
your macro beat! Continue doing this as I chant the song.
Now, we are going to learn the song together. When my hands are
on my chest, its my turn, and when they are out to you, it is
your turn.
Call and response the first two measures,Hickory Dickory Dock
Call and response measures three and four, The mouse ran up the clock."
Call and response measures five and six, The clock struck one, the mouse
ran down"
Call and response measures seven and eight, Hickory Dickory Dock
Now, I will chant the poem again, watch and listen carefully.
(Chant the entire song, demonstrating the patting of micro beats with my
hands on my legs)
This time I want you to do what I did, gently patting your hands on
your legs. This is your micro beat! Continue doing this as I
chant the song.
Continue the macro beat by swaying from side to side, and the
micro beat by gently patting your hands on your legs. I will
sing the song. Listen carefully!
Now, I will chant and you listen carefully. When my arms are out
to you, you sing with me.
Chant, Hickory dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock (Cue them in)
Now, I will chant and you listen carefully. When my arms are out to
you, you sing with me.
Chant, The clock struck one, the mouse ran down, Hickory dickory

dock"(Cue them in)

Now, lets chant the whole song! Continuing the macro and micro beats.

Practice and Extend

Can I have a volunteer for someone to be our clock?

Great, you will be our clock! You will move one of your arms like a
pendulum.
(Demonstrate movement. Back and forth as the two macro beats in each
measure)
Lets have another volunteer for someone to play the claves.
Wonderful! You will play the claves on the macro beats of each
measure.
(Demonstrate playing claves on macro beats)
Now, we are all going to chant the whole song, and this time, if
you are not our clock or our clave player, we are going to run
up to this side of the room when the chant says, The mouse
ran up the clock. And when the chant says, The mouse ran
down, we will run back to our places.
Please run carefully, being aware of our body space and the room.
Here we go! (Cue them in).
Assess Learning and Closure
It can be so much fun to chant a song that goes along with a
well-known book, and listen carefully to the words in a song and do
movements along with it! Great job!
