Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Lets review some dynamic symbols! (Show pp, p, mf, f, ff
on projector, with We love snow days.
2. (Point to pp on screen), what does this stand for? (Allow
think time)... pianissimo!...What does it mean? (Allow think time)...
really, really soft!
3. Now, I want you to say the sentence We love show days at
the different dynamic levels. Lets start with pp. (Hand gesture
them to say it)
4. (If they were too loud) Can you be even softer? (have them
say it again)
5. Great! Now I want you to say it at (point to p)
6. Continue with the rest of the dynamic levels.

Present
1. Now we are going to listen to a piece of music, called,
William Tell Overture. I want you to follow along to this listening

map (project it) . Find the dynamic markings on the map, find the
crescendo.
2. (Play recording) and follow along to help.
Practice & Extend
1. By the time I say zero, be in a small group to discuss this
song (five, four, three, etc).
2. I want you to discuss what you heard in your small group,
and then decide on one thing each group will share with the class. (I
will walk around and listen in on the groups).
3. Now, I want one person from each group to share what
youve discussed. Which group would like to share first?
4. Now, I want you to think about what effect the dynamics
had on the piece of music. How did the dynamics help create the
image of a thunderstorm? Stay in your same small groups and then
be ready to share something with the class in a few minutes.
5. Now, I want one person from each group to share something
that youve discussed. Which group would like to share first?
Assess & Close
1. Great job today reviewing the dynamic symbols that you
know and then listening carefully to the music and following along
to the listening map. Dynamics are an important part of a piece of
music and they can help create an image in our mind, just like the
thunderstorm that was created in our minds.
