Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Hello boys and girls! (Have them stay in their chairs)
2. Today, were going to learn a song called Charlie Over the Ocean
and then play a game.
3. I sing the song first.
4. Call and response to teach the song.
5. Have one group sing the initial pattern and the other group sing
the echo.
Present
6. Lets all get in a circle outside the rug.
7. I want you to think of something that you would find in the ocean
or sea. Dont say it out loud. It wont matter if someone else chooses
what you have, but you have to have something in your head,
because at one point, I will tap you on your shoulder and you will
need to know what you are going to sing about. (give ideas: starfish,
whale, shark, fish, etc)
8. I am going to sing as I walk around the circle, and you echo
standing in place.
9. Charlie over the ocean (students echo)
10. Charlie over the sea (students echo)
11. If Im thinking of a starfish, I will say Charlie caught a starfish
(students echo)
12. When I say Cant catch me, I will tap someones shoulder. If you

get tapped, its your job to walk fast and try to get me before I make
it back to your spot in the circle.
*Not playing outs in this game because it is not fair to students. Try
to let each student in the class have at least one turn.
Practice & Extend
13. The person who was tapped will then become our leader.
Everyone else in the circle will echo what the leader says.
14. If you are our leader, please make sure you have something in
your head that you would find in the ocean or sea, because you will
sing about that. Then say Cant catch me and then you tap
someone else!
Assess & Close
