MM 309E HEAT TRANSFER

HOMEWORK II
Due on: October 22th, 2013
Q1. Consider a wall of thickness L as shown in figure. A fluid at a temperature T1 with a
heat transfer coefficient h1 flows over the surface at x=0, and another fluid at a
temperature T2 with a heat transfer coefficient h2 flows over the surface at x=L of the
plate.

(a) Develop an expression for the heat flow Q
through an area of the plate.

(b) Calculate the heat transfer rate through

A=1 m2 of the wall for T1 = 130 o C ,

T 2 = 30 o C ,

h 2 = 500 W ( m 2 o C ) , L = 4 cm , k = 20 W ( m o C ) .

Q2. A steel tube with 5-cm inner diameter, 7.6 cm outer diameter, and k = 15 W ( m o C ) is
covered with an insulative covering of thickness t = 2 cm and k = 0.2 W ( m o C ) . A hot gas
at T1 = 330 o C , h1 = 400 W ( m 2 o C ) flows inside the tube. The outer surface of the
insulation is exposed to cooler air at T 2 = 30 o C , h 2 = 60 W ( m 2 o C ) .
(a) Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for L = 10 m of the tube.
(b) Calculate the temperature drps resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow,
the steel tube, the insulation layer, and the outside air.
